The Big Little Brain blog is on break for the holidays.

I would love to say that I will be off on an island soaking up the sun.  The truth is I am simply taking the time to enjoy the winter break with my husband and children.

I hope all of you have a Happy New Year!

New posts will begin again on Monday, January 4th, 2010.

santa

Are your children anxiously awaiting Santa’s arrival?

For those of you who believe in Santa, Christmas Eve can be a very busy evening.  Besides the family gatherings, church celebrations and gift opening this is also a night that the Santa checklist must be completed.

museum

Do you have any outings planned for the winter break?

Museum trips? Art exhibits? Concerts? The zoo?

I truly enjoy winter break.  It is a fun time to do activities around the city with the entire family.  No need to worry about  bedtime, homework or after school activities.  It is simply quality time with the family.

Over break we are finally going to go see the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Science Museum.  We have been wanting to go since the fall but have yet to make it there.

boring

What is the most common phrase parents will hear over winter break?

I’m bored.  There’s nothing to do.

Followed by the second most popular phrase,

I’m hungry.

Most children truly enjoy being home for break.  Time to sleep in, play with their toys and maybe schedule a sleepover at a  friend’s house.  However parents will find that as the anticipation for Christmas draws near some children just don’t know what to do with themselves.  This is the time when parents will hear, “I’m bored.”

Parents, as soon as this phrase leaves your child’s mouth you need to be prepared and hand him/her a fun (yet educational and time consuming) winter holiday worksheet.

A number of children will enjoy connecting the dots on Santa’s beard and others will learn to find something to do before discussing their state of boredom.
