Did you know that February is I love to Read Month?

For those of you thinking it right now I will just say it… Why is there a specific month to love reading?  People should love to read no matter what month.  I suppose if they (whomever they may be) can declare October National Dessert Month, it is only fair to give reading its own month.

So my next question is, what activities will you do to celebrate I Love to Read Month?

One of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child is to instill a love of reading.  By reading to your child in the early years you are setting the example of the joy and importance of reading.  Continuing to read to your children helps to encourage independent reading.  Make a point to read to your children at least 20 minutes a day.  The benefits of being read to affect children more than you may realize.

Idea of the Day:

Create reading activities or goals for the month of February.

- Olympic Activity. Have children set daily or weekly reading goals.  At the end of each week or the end of the month award medals.

- Meal Activity. To expose children to a variety of genres, use a meal plan approach.  Designate each day to be a specific food group.

* Fruits & Vegetables - Poetry
* Soup - Current Events
* Fish - Science/Nature
* Meat - Biography/History
* Dessert - Fiction
* Milk - Sports/Hobbies
* After-dinner mint - Comics

- Reading PJ Party. Put on the pajamas, make some popcorn, get out the sleeping bags and camp out on the living room floor.  Each family member should have his/her own book to read or read a story as a family.  Children also like it if you turn off all the lights and read with flashlights.

- Stop, Drop and Read. Tell your children that each day you will yell the word, “STOP!” Once they hear the word they must stop whatever they are doing, grab a book and sit down and read for 10 minutes.  Make sure you do this as well.  You can take turns each day and let each child yell the word, stop!
